How many times have we heard over the years that _______ is the new black? "Orange is the new black", "blue is the new black", or the most recent "gray is the new black" ... Don't get me wrong, I love all of those colors but black is in a class of it's own!
I saw a post on instagram the other day (which I of course now can not find. Does that happen to anyone else?) of a room clad in black walls with #blackisthenewblack. And that got me thinking ... black is classic and timeless, it's been a constant in the design and fashion worlds, it's flattering, it goes with everything. No wonder all other colors want to be like black!
White walls are ALL the rage right now ... and I LOVE them! They're bright, crisp, and clean. I love white walls with bright colors, I love white walls with more white (and LOTS and LOTS of texture). But I love white's very best friend equally!
Here's the thing, black walls can be intimidating, especially to those of us in the pacific northwest where we have to be very careful about our use of cooler tones. What I hope to convey in this post is that black walls do not have to be scary and cold! They have an amazing way of giving this sense of being wrapped in a blanket. They're comfortable and cozy. They're incredibly sophisticated and rather sexy! They can be luxe and glam, and they can be rustic and earthy. They can be very masculine (a favorite design characteristic of mine) but they can also be effectively used in a room with feminine elements (just wait, you'll see below!).
I have a few favorites when it comes to rooms suitable for black walls. A cozy and masculine den/office tops the list!
And, the icing on the cake ... they're lacquered! Even more luxe!
A close second for favorite places for black walls is a bathroom!
Black tiled walls ... yuuuuuuuum!!!!
Finally, a dining room is another perfect place for black walls!
The dining room is where I chose to bring black walls into my home!
My incredibly talented friend Katherine Drew is painting me a piece of art for that very blank wall! I'm so excited!
I am so thrilled with ho black walls turned out in the dining room! The white wainscoting and white oak floors really brighten the space and allow the black to bring an excitingly high level of contrast. It's invigorating during the day light and romantic and cozy at night!
I suppose my dining room looks pretty humble compared to the other well appointed spaces, but I still have more plans for the room! I would like some new dining furniture (a table the fits the whole family at the holidays is my dream!), an area rug, and some window treatments. And while I like my farm house chairs, something more comfortable to encourage those lingering meals and conversations is what I am dreaming of! But I have to pace myself ... lest the bank account and the husband scream at me!
Ok, so what do you think of black walls? Willing to give it a shot?!
I had to include just one more image of this FABULOUS entry designed by the talented Kelly Wearstler!
